When you first explore either Wompatuck State Park or Bare Cove Park it can be hard to imagine that both of these areas were once part of the US Naval Munitions production and were linked by a rail spur (still visible along Beal St).

The area known today as Bare Cove Park was acquired by the US Navy in 1906 and part of the Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot until 1971 . The 484-acre park is features many miles of paved walking trails and beautiful waterfront along the Back River.

The 3526-acre Wompatuck State Park is built on the former Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot Annex which was used to store munitions from approximately 1941 through 1962. Today the park features 12 miles of non-motorized roads, 40 miles of forest trails, and a 250 site campground. This is a great place to ride bikes or hike. Parts of the park are still off limits with fear of leftover ordinance. If you look carefully along your journey, you may spot remains of some of the storage or maintenance buildings.
